Founded in 1749, Chesterfield County is located near the state capital of Richmond. The county borders are primarily defined by the James River to the north and the Appomattox River to the South. Much of the southern and eastern portions of the county are considered part of the Tri-Cities area, which includes Petersburg, Virginia.
As of July 1, 2014, the county's population was estimated to be 330,043, making it the third-most populous county in Virginia. The economy is largely industrial-based and in May 2004, Chesterfield was named the "17th Best Place to Live in America" by the American City Business Journals.
